Phytosterols, also called plant sterols and stanols, are compounds found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds and are commonly discussed alongside dietary approaches to lipid wellness. Because they compete with cholesterol for absorption, they can also reduce absorption of some fat-soluble nutrients such as carotenoids. Eating a varied diet with plenty of colorful produce, and spacing them from fat-soluble supplements, are commonly suggested to offset this.
